Top ten Hotels in Las Vegas June 4, 2009

Palazzo

The Palazzo at Night
This luxury all-suite hotel, opened in early 2008 next to sister property The Venetian, is the newest all-suite property in Las Vegas. In the lobby, fountains stretch two stories high, and a 60-foot glass dome, imported marble floors and bronze columns make an impressive statement. $$$
//

Bellagio

The famous Fountains of the Bellagio Las Vegas
Bellagio
Classically romantic, this resort is styled after a lakeside village in Tuscany. The fountains out front dance a ballet of sorts throughout each day. Inside, a botanical garden with a matching glass ceiling sculpture provide more sustenance for your senses. This hotel has a special place in my heart, ever since I spent my honeymoon there a couple of years ago. Ask for a Lake View room for an enchanting look at the dancing fountains gracing the 8-acre lake. $$$

Red Rock Casino Resort

Entrance to Red Rock Casino Resort
Charlyn Keating Chisholm
The first billion-dollar resort and casino to be built off the Strip, Red Rock takes full advantage of a picturesque setting in the mountains. This luxury resort was conceived on a smaller scale then the typical Strip behemoth, resulting in a more intimate feel. Las Vegas flash is added with over three million crystals woven into the decor. Glass windows overlook the surrounding mountains. $$

Four Seasons Hotel Las Vegas

A few steps above many of the other resorts on the Strip in elegance and style Located at the Southernmost tip of the Strip at the top of Mandalay Bay, the Four Seasons is almost a hidden oasis among the din and fervor of Las Vegas. $$$

THEhotel at Mandalay Bay

An all-suite, non-gaming hotel within the Mandalay Bay towers, THEhotel is a sleek option on the south end of the Strip. Guests of THEhotel enjoy all of the amenities of the [link url=http://hotels.about.com/od/lasvegas/p/mandalay_bay.htm]Mandalay Bay casino and resort[/link] complex, including the water park, shopping and restaurants. THEhotel has its own spa, The Bathhouse, and a separate entrance. $$

The Venetian

The Venetian treats guests to a taste of Renaissance Italy in the desert. With an indoor shopping area modeled after St. Mark’s Square, a replica of the canals and gondolas of Venice, and sixteen restaurants by the likes of Wolfgang Puck and Emeril Lagasse, put this huge resort into the category of “must see it to believe it.” $$$

Mandalay Bay Resort & Casino

Since its opening in 1999, Mandalay Bay has become one of the most popular hotels on the Strip. At night, rumjungle becomes one of the hippest night spots in town. Concerts are held in the arena or the House of Blues concert hall. During the day, there’s a rare coin museum, a walk-through aquarium and several trendy restaurants. $$

Palms Casino Resort

Playboy Pool at The PalmsPalms Casino Resort
Playboy-inspired hotel west of the Strip popular with the L.A. Crowd and celebrities like Paris Hilton and Jessica Simpson. A magnet for celebrities, the Palms has been making waves among the hip and young crowd since its opening in 2001. A South Beach atmosphere and two of the hottest nightclubs in town add to the draw. $$

Paris Las Vegas Hotel & Casino

If you can’t swing the overseas flight, Paris Las Vegas will give you a taste of the City of Lights. The hotel catches your eye from the Strip with a replica of the Eiffel Tower. Inside the hotel and casino is a dollhouse version of the city, with cobblestone streets, sidewalk cafes and folks greeting you with “Bonjour.” $

Caesar’s Palace

When Caesars Palace opened on the Las Vegas Strip in 1966, it set a new standard in opulence and elegance. Today, despite competition from newer hotels, Caesars still holds its own. The Forum Shops are decadent shopping at its best, and is fun to walk through if just to see the blue sky ceiling and fountain statues that come to life. Older kids will love the virtual reality rides. $$

To dos in San Francisco June 4, 2009

Filed under: Going out on the town. — liliaan @ 6:00 pm

Most people do their Chinatown touring during the day, but some of the most
interesting sites are found at night. For a little taste of Chinatown’s underbelly, we recommend the following bars: Bow Bow Cocktail Lounge (1155 Grant Avenue – a certain bordello feeling) Li Po (916 Grant Avenue – an opium den without the opium), and Lamour Nightclub (931 Kearny – an underground hangout in every sense of the word).

Beach Blanket Babylon

From Website:
It is a zany musical spoof of pop culture with extravagant costumes and outrageously huge hats. The Show’s immediate popularity forced it to move to larger quarters at Club Fugazi, a North Beach landmark, where it eventually found a permanent home. Now in its 30th year of sold-out performances, BEACH BLANKET BABYLON is an internationally acclaimed San Francisco institution. BEACH BLANKET BABYLON in addition to the more than 10,000 performances in San Francisco, has performed for wildly enthusiastic audiences during its London and Las Vegas engagements. BEACH BLANKET BABYLON continually evolves in its hilarious parodies of popular icons, updating its spoofs and adding new characters, songs, and send-ups throughout the year. The show’s traveling version performs regularly for conventions and private groups from Tampa Bay, Florida, to Kaanapali, Hawaii.

Stow Lake
Western Part of San Francisco
50 Lake Street
San Francisco CA
P: 415.752.0347
Golden Gate has numerous hidden treasures amongst its 1,017 acres, but one of the most romantic and enjoyable is Stow Lake where you can rent rowboats and paddle boats or enjoy a hike up to the Strawberry Peak on the top of the island in the middle of the lake. The walk around the lake is almost exactly a mile so this is a good place to get a workout too.

Ten things you need to do in Las Vegas June 4, 2009

Filed under: Going out on the town. — liliaan @ 5:56 pm

Wynn Las Vegas
At Wynn Las Vegas you will vicariously experience luxury at prices that certainly are not cheap, but on weekdays for most of the year are surprisingly affordable for an experience such as this. High points: Rooms: don’t hesitate to stay in the standard room, which is plenty large at 640 sq. ft., and is appointed with luxury amenities, offers full TV and movies (unlike many hotels that skimp in this area since they want you on the casino floor), a large bathroom, and for our money, the world’s most comfortable bed; Staff: the staff has been well trained to answer your every question; Entertainment: Always an innovator, Mr. Wynn booked La Reve. Though it is not a The Cirque du Soleil production, La Reve was created by Franco Dragone (Cirque’s creator) and is receiving rave reviews; Restaurants: at Wynn the restaurant chef is on premises (wit00h one exception) so you will enjoy Wing Lei, Bartolotta, Alex, Red 8, Okada, SW Steakhouse and Daniel Boulud. 3131 Las Vegas Blvd. South Las Vegas, NV 89109; Tel: (702) 770-7000; Toll Free: (877) 321-WYNN. (contributed by Monty & Sara Preiser)

Colosseum at Caesars Palace

Taking over the fabulous Colosseum at Caesars Palace is Cher—the nearly immortal actress, singer, and songwriter whose career has spanned over an amazing four-decade period. For fans, Cher Las Vegas will be a treat highlighting the artist’s career over time. For both fans and those new to Cher (although, seriously, who hasn’t heard of Cher?), the Cher Las Vegas show is sure to dazzle with the kind of flare and flamboyance inherent to Las Vegas. A host of dancers and acrobats decked out in elaborate designer costumes turn this concert into an all out extravaganza. Sets move in and out from above, below, and all sides and create the ability for this stage to completely change atmosphere in the blink of an eye. In an era when shows in Sin City are constantly upping the ante, Cher takes up the challenge. Because Cher Las Vegas is one of the most hyped shows in town, Cher tickets nearly always sell out so make sure to buy ahead of time if at all possible. Visit Cher Las Vegas Tickets for more information.

The Pool at the Mirage Hotel

When you walk into the lobby of the Mirage Hotel, located in the heart of the Strip, you immediately step into an atrium which is akin to a tropical rainforest. Trees, waterfalls, exotic birds — they’re all here. Continue through the casino and head out back to the gorgeous pool area, the Mirage’s outdoor oasis. Trust me, you’ve never seen so many palm trees in the middle of the desert. The pool itself is huge, a meandering ribbon of blue that zigs and zags through the lush foliage. The sound of a rushing waterfall at one end of the pool is invigorating. A second waterfall further back is more subdued. During busy periods, the pool area has 1,200 chaises available to guests. Service here is tops, from the cabana boys to the cheerful cocktail waitresses wrapped in sexy little sarongs. Water aerobics classes are offered daily and this is no ordinary water ballet for seniors. Pool managers leads intrepid sun worshipers through a non-stop 45-minute workout that will work off every last trace of that breakfast buffet. The more leisurely inclined can take advantage of a nifty bench that runs along the inner perimeter of the pool to read the latest Danielle Steel in cool (and wet) comfort. Kids of all ages can kill a few hours on the rock ‘em, sock ‘em water slide. Chances are awfully good that you’re going to catch a sunny day in Las Vegas, so with some heavy-duty sunblock and a wide-brimmed hat, you’re in great shape to take advantage of the prettiest, most enjoyable pool in town. One thing to keep in mind: this pool is available to guests of the Mirage only. That’s not a bad thing, because it’s a great place to stay.

The Canyon Ranch SpaClub at the Venetian Hotel

Although this is Las Vegas, the Spa at the Venetian is considerably better than the spas at many luxury resorts which are in the spa business. Discover this oasis of health and rejuvenation far above the noise and excitement of the Las Vegas Strip. The 69,000-square-foot Canyon Ranch SpaClub® is a leading-edge health spa and fitness oasis. Consider it your haven, where you can relax, refresh and regroup between forays into the world’s liveliest nonstop city. Work out, have a massage or a rejuvenating body treatment, beautify yourself or just kick back in this serene, smoke-free retreat. Enjoy delicious, fresh spa cuisine at the delightful Canyon Ranch Café. Everything you want and need – including the only hair and nail salon in The Venetian – is right here.

The Liberace Museum

I’m not kidding. This is the best $15.00 you will spend in Las Vegas ($10 for seniors 65+) . I’ll have to admit that my recollection of the great pianist was pretty hazy. Well, it all came back to me in a hurry once I walked through the door. Set among three small buildings a short cab ride from the Strip, the Liberace Museum is a Liberace lovefest and a fitting tribute to the pianist and showman. It’s all here: the rhinestone-studded, fur-draped costumes; the mind-boggling jewelry, including a small token of affection from Queen Elizabeth II; the pianos and cars, among them a 1934 Mercedes Excalibur covered in Austrian rhinestones; and oodles of photos, press clippings and memorabilia which tell the story of the man who helped put Las Vegas on the map. You’ll walk in the door thinking this is high camp, but you’ll most assuredly leave an admiring fan. The Liberace Museum, 1775 E. Tropicana, Las Vegas. Open Tues-Sat 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., Sundays from Noon to 4 p.m. Closed Mondays.
.

Gaming Classes at the Las Vegas Hilton

I notice in Las Vegas they always refer to gambling classes as “gaming classes.” Is this to make it all sound…nicer? I’m not sure, but I’m glad these classes are available, because I certainly don’t know all the ins and outs of pai gow poker. Even if I only plan on watching, it’s still nice to know what’s going on. Most of the casinos in town offer gaming classes five days a week, a quick thirty-minute primer on roulette, craps, mini-baccarat, pai gow poker or blackjack, and the classes are usually free.

Dinner at Emeril’s

Las Vegas hasn’t often been thought of as a gastronome’s delight. I’m betting that it soon will be, thanks to the likes of Emeril’s. There isn’t a lot of home-grown talent on the local dining scene just yet, but that’s okay, because Las Vegas can afford to import. Chef Emeril Lagasse opened his first restaurant, Emeril’s, in New Orleans’ warehouse district and opened a second, NOLA, in that fabled city’s French Quarter. He’s now brought his very own “new New Orleans” brand of cookery to Las Vegas, and the news couldn’t be better. This restaurant is arguably the best table in Las Vegas, a town which now boasts the likes of Spago and the Coyote Cafe. The sleek and elegant dining room gives way to a meal which is a marriage of traditional cajun and Creole cookery joined with today’s lighter hand and kickier flavors. The result is food which is immensely pleasing to both the eye and the palate. A few suggestions to whet the appetite: how about starting with a homemade savory lobster cheesecake, an appetizer which is sliced and served with a Creole-spiced tomato-tarragon coulis? Continue with the warm wilted spinach salad, which comes with a warm andouille sausage dressing, sliced red onions and Louisiana Chicory Farms goat cheese. Emeril’s is a fish house, so you might want to try the potato-crusted farm raised bass, which is served with a Louisiana lump crabmeat and wild mushroom relish. If you can handle it, order the banana cream pie for dessert. The service, food and atmosphere at Emeril’s make for a memorable evening. Emeril’s at the MGM Grand Hotel is open for lunch and dinner seven days.

Flip It

No, this isn’t tiddly winks. It’s tiddly’s slick and mischievous evil twin. And aren’t evil twins always irresistible? You’ll find Flip It in many Las Vegas casinos. It’s a big machine, kind of an oversized slot machine. There’s a large piece of glass in front, and behind the glass are trays filled with gold-colored dollar coins. The trays are bursting with coins, and the coins appear as if they’re ready to spill over at any moment. So here’s the drill: you pop your own dollar coin into the machine, it does a somersault in the air and, with any kind of luck, lands at just the right spot on one of these trays so as to knock a few, hopefully a lot, of coins off and into your piggybank. Sound simple enough? Try it for yourself. If you’re like most people, you’ll be amazed at how stubborn these coins can be. They just don’t want to fall! And like the rest of us, you’re going to keep on trying because you are sooo close. Flip It is part carnival game, part gaming game — in other words, you can win or lose a lot of money here. But more than likely, you’ll find the action irresistible. Flip It can be found at most of the larger Las Vegas Hotels.

Stratosphere Tower

Why do the words “only in Las Vegas” come to mind when I think of the Stratosphere Tower? I’ll tell you why. This is the tallest free-standing observation tower in the U.S.A. The view from the top is spectacular — you’ll see all the hotels on the Strip, the suburban sprawl which is the new Las Vegas and even Mt. Charleston in the distance, a snow-covered peak which is over 11,000 feet high. But that wasn’t enough for the Stratosphere folks. They also added a rollercoaster at the top, the world’s highest rollercoaster, and if that doesn’t prove to be enough of a thrill ride, you can try the Big Shot, a reverse bungee jump which will shoot you 160 feet into the air at 45 m.p.h. and then send you zooming back down. Don’t forget to check out Insanity, the Ride, a massive mechanical arm that extends 64 feet over the edge of the Tower and spins you at a force of 3 Gs for a truly mind-bending experience. If you survive all of this, there’s also a bar and restaurant at the top where you can order yourself a stiff drink. Lots of Stratosouvenirs for sale at the top, too. Hey, this isn’t just a tower, it’s an event.

The Strip

It’s officially known as Las Vegas Boulevard, but in reality it’s a strip of glitz and glam of unrivaled proportions. To say it’s over the top might be an understatement. The Strip is the main drag of gambling U.S.A. and home to most of the top hotels and casinos. A stroll down the Strip at night is a blaze of blinking lights and a sea of humanity making its way to that winning slot machine. Nighttime is also the most comfortable time of day to be outdoors in the Las Vegas heat zone, so take your stroll under the stars and bask in the glow. A couple of choice stops are at the Mirage for its signature volcano, which erupts every fifteen minutes in good weather, and at the Treasure Island for the epic pirate battle. The battle takes place every 90 minutes starting at 4 p.m. and although it’s a brief showdown, it’s a helluva fight. The best of the Strip is on Las Vegas Boulevard between Sahara and Tropicana Avenues.

Okay, I admit it, Las Vegas is too big for a top ten. So here’s two more!

Casinos

You didn’t think I’d forget, did you? There are a lot of good new reasons to come to Las Vegas, but there’s still a pretty good old reason. The opportunity to gamble is at every turn, and what reasonable person could resist? There truly is something for everyone in the casinos of Las Vegas. Slot machines start as low as a nickel, and big hitters can always try their luck at craps or pai gow poker. While it’s fun to win (certainly not to lose), it’s also fun to watch. The casino crowd these days is a cross-section of America, maybe the world, and everyone seems to be having a good time. My favorite casinos, probably because they’re newer, brighter and less intimidating, are at the MGM Grand, Monte Carlo, Treasure Island and the Mirage. Bring your quarters, a sense of humor and get ready to have some fun. Oh, and good luck! Casinos in Las Vegas are open 24 hours a day and too numerous to mention.

Bellagio Hotel

The Bellagio Hotel & Resort, the Italian-flavored resort-casino is at 3600 Las Vegas Blvd South (888-987-6667), is on the infamous Strip. Dining is accelerated to a crescendo at Bellagio’s thirteen restaurants, which run the gamut from gourmet dining to easy informal meals. For gourmet dining you can experience haute cuisine at Le Cirque, or at its sister restaurant, Osteria Del Circo. Chef Julian Serrano left his perch at the four-star Masa’s restaurant in San Francisco to open Picasso in Bellagio, probably the most beautiful restaurant in Las Vegas. MICHAEL MINA is a clone of one of San Francisco’s best restaurants, and is a seafood venue with a distinct blend of California and Mediterranean ingredients. Prime Steakhouse, which is overseen by Manhattan’s Jean-George Vongerichten, features the chef’s signature dishes such as crab mango salad with cumin crackers; an assembled tomato accented with basil oil; and entrees such as the house prime steaks that come with a variety of sauces from béarnaise to tamarind, or seven different mustards. For Asian meals, seek out either Jasmine, Shintaro or Noodles restaurants.

Top Ten Spa Ideas June 4, 2009

Filed under: Spas — liliaan @ 5:50 pm

Deciding how to spoil the one you love can sometimes be a bit tricky. Here are some ideas to make your life a bit easier.

1: Organize a Spa Hotel / Resort In-Room Massage

Nothing is more romantic then enjoying a massage with the one your love in your hotel or resort room. The spa will do everything for you. Treatment beds, music and everything that is needed to make the experience as romantic as possible, will be delivered and set up in your room. What makes this option even more desirable is that the treatments are performed at the same time and you can even pre-arrange in-room champagne, lunch or dinner with the hotel for an after-treatment treat.

2: Outdoor Treatment Experience

Numerous spas around the world offer treatments outdoors in settings such as: on the beach, in a natural game park location, on the building’s rooftop with views of the cityscape, in the mountains etc… The options go on and on. Depending on you and your partner’s preferences, choose a spa in an outdoor location that you love and organize your treatments to be performed in this setting.

3: Mobile Spa Experience

Want to have your romantic day or evening at home? Organize a mobile spa to arrange you and your partners favorite treatments in the comfort of your own home. Everything is arranged for you and all you need to do is relax. Perfect for those of you wanting to organize your own romantic dinner or evening at home or purely wanting to surprise.

4: Spa Day Packages

If you want to experience a whole day being pampered at a beautiful spa with the one you love, this option is for you. Most spas offer day packages where you can spend an entire day relaxing using the spa’s facilities and having treatments done. Usually breakfast, lunch and drinks are included or are an option and free gifts are also sometimes included when booking on special days of the year. A perfect way to show someone how much you care.

5: Spa Vouchers

A wonderful option if you want to treat your partner but would like to give them the choice of when and what spa treat to choose. Also a lovely extra surprise after a dinner out or with some flowers.

6: Spa Products and Accessories

Pamper him or her with top of the range spa products and accessories for a home spa experience. Spas can assist you in choosing the right products or making up a spa package for your loved one. A wonderful gift or gift addition.

7: Spa Getaway

If you really want to spoil him or her, organize a weekend or holiday away in one of the many spa resorts and hotels scattered around the world. Browse though the Health Spa Guru collection to find the one that suits you best. An exciting surprise that allows you to get pampered in the country or location of your choice for more than just a day.

8: Couples Treatments

If you would like to enjoy the spa experience with your partner, ensure to book a twin treatment room or spa suite when arranging a treatment at your spa. The twin treatment room will allow you both to be treated in the same room and to experience the pampering together. A spa suite is also wonderful, as after being treated together in the suite you can relax in the spa suite facilities exclusive to you and your loved one.

9: Book Exclusive Use of a Spa

Booking exclusive use of a spa can be expensive and is really for those of you really wanting to spoil and splash out. Remember to call in advance if spa exclusivity is your plan. Although not all spas offer this option, it is a wonderful way to spend the day as there will be no interruptions from other visitors to the spa and the spa facilities will be all yours.

10: Create a Home Spa

Want to personally create a spa experience at home for your partner? This is a excellent way to show how much you care by taking the effort to create the spa experience yourself. Spa bath crystals and powders, essential oils and spa accessories can be purchased at many of your local spas. Add some flowers, candles and some music and your spa creation could be the perfect romantic gift.

Top ten beaches for kids June 4, 2009

Filed under: Beaches — liliaan @ 5:35 pm

Ah… there’s nothing quite like sand, surf and sea. Whether you prefer playing in the mud or splashing in the ocean, we’ve surveyed the country from coast to coast to bring you the top 10 beaches for kids! So pack up your beach bag and make for the seaside – and don’t forget the sunscreen!

Cannon Beach, Oregon

This beach is set against old-growth forests, just 80 miles west of Portland, OR. Even though the Pacific waters are at times a bit too cold to swim in, this beach offers tons of great activities like kite flying (with colorful kites sold right in town), exploring tide pools and building sandcastles. In fact, June 16 is Sandcastle Day, and kids of all ages are invited to enter one of the West Coast’s biggest sandcastle-building contests.

Cape May, New Jersey

This beach is part of a National Historic District in the south of NJ. Miles of sandy beach and plenty of ice-cream shops can be found here. You can also strut down the boardwalk of North Wildwood, which is set up like an amusement park!

Coast Guard Beach, Massachusetts

You’ve probably already heard of Cape Cod – tons of families head there every summer for their annual beach getaways. Huge beaches, pounding surf, fried food and ice cream – it’s what every dream vacation is made of! Try body surfing on the amazing waves at the National Seashore’s Coast Guard Beach, or spend the day getting to know the endangered piping plovers that nest there in the early summer. This is also the site of the Mayflower’s first New World landing.

Coronado, California

We all know Cali’s got plenty of great beaches – well, Coronado is one of them. Just a short way from San Diego (you can drive over a bridge or take a ferry), pick this beach if you want to boogie board, surf and swim. There’s also plenty of kid-friendly activities nearby at the Hotel del Coronado – sandcastle building, kite making, and more. If you visit in early winter (still sunny and warm!), don’t forget to check out the gray whales breaching right offshore during their annual migration.

Daytona Beach, Florida

We wouldn’t be surprised if you’ve already heard of or visited this amazing beach in the state of Florida. It features 23 miles of sparkling sand and surfside fun, including wildlife adventures, racecar simulations, visits to the Kennedy Space Center in Cape Canaveral, and, of course, a visit to Mickey Mouse in Orlando – only about an hour away!

Hilton Head Island, South Carolina

This is SC’s own 14-mile beachfront that’s got shallow waters for wading and playing, gentle waves that won’t knock you over and soft sand to lie on and play in. You may even see dolphins frolicking in the sparkling blue water – even more likely if you convince mom and dad to take you on a dolphin cruise. Check out the beach’s signature red-and-white striped lighthouse.

Newport Beach, California

Miles and miles of sandcasle-ready beach is waiting for you in Southern CA. Watch serious surfers ride the 25-foot waves at the “Wedge” at Balboa Peninsula or, for calmer waters, trek to Corona del Mar State Beach. Strut the buzzing boardwalk, where you can rent a family-friendly bike that’s built for four!

Orient Beach State Park, New York

OK, so when you think of New York the last thing you may picture is a beach. But Long Island, New York’s amazing beaches are a prime destination for families looking to get away from the buzz of the city. Orient Beach is one of those, and features playgrounds, picnic areas and BBQ grills. Or, rent a bike or kayak and go exploring!

Poipu Beach Park, Hawaii

Hawaii’s beaches are world-famous – but where do kids and families go to have fun? The crescent-shaped beaches of Poipu Beach Park on the island of Kauai have calm, shallow waters that make great training grounds if you want to learn how to surf or body-board. You can snorkel in the crystal-clear waters of the Pacific, swim with green sea turtles, dolphins, whales and endangered seals.

Sanibel Island, Florida

Another Florida fave, Sanibel Island is famous for its gorgeous seashells, soft white sand, gentle surf and shallow waters. Be sure to make a trip to the Wildlife Refuge, where bald eagles and over 240 species of other birds, reptiles and mammals live. You can also take an Everglades Day Safari to see more creepy crawlers!

Top ten nude beaches in the world June 4, 2009

Filed under: Beaches — liliaan @ 5:30 pm

Below are 10 of the best beaches for baring all. All details are taken from Bare Beaches, which lists over 200 other popular spots for nude bathing around the world.

1. Leucate Plage, France

Mediterranean coast, north of Perpignan

This superb bare beach has 1 km of fine golden sand, the classic Mediterranean beach. The water is normally calm and the shore shelves gently into the sea making it popular with families. Three naturist resorts share the coastline but the beach is open to all and there’s plenty of space for first-time skinny-dippers and lifelong nudists alike.

Go north from Perpignan on the main N9 and turn right on to the D83, signposted Port Bacares. After 9 kms turn left on to the D627, drive through Port Leucate and the bare beach is on the right. Park on the road – easy public access between Aphrodite Village and Club Oasis, the naturist resorts.

2. Playa Es Pregons Gran, Balearic islands

Majorca south coast

This wonderful little bare bay has a perfect crescent of fine yellow sand, washed by a sea so transparent it looks more like the Caribbean. There are no beach bars so bring your picnic and drinks. It’s the jewel in the crown of the popular Es Trenc beach area.

The route to the beach is a pleasant 15 minute walk along the shore, heading north from the resort town of Colonia Sant Jordi. Start at the Hotel Marques Del Palmer, and it’s the third bay along. The fourth bay, if you walk further, also happens to be a bare beach, part of the much larger Es Trenc beach.

Go ahead and dive in, wearing only your birthday suit!

3. Haulover Beach, Florida USA

Sunny Isles, north Miami

Situated in the south of the ‘Sunshine State’, this bare sandy beach has a huge following of visitors from across the globe. With glorious weather for most of the year and the vibrant city of Miami on the doorstep, it’s not difficult to see why. The bare area is more than 800 yards long and has its own lifeguards and unobtrusive police patrols. Refreshments, sunbeds and umbrellas are available.

The beach is at Haulover Beach Miami-Dade county regional park, on Collins Avenue (A1A), just north of fashionable Bal Harbour. There is a large car park ($5) right by the beach.

4. Vera Playa, Spain

Costa Almeria

This is Spain’s capital of bare bathing. The long wide sandy beach is popular in summer and has a big choice of naturist accommodation. Beach bars, sunbeds, pedalos and yes, if you really want to try the naturist cliché, beach volleyball are all available. Almeria has the hottest and driest climate in the country, so the beach season is

almost year-round. Most European nationalities park their bottoms here, giving it a cosmopolitan and friendly atmosphere.

Take the coast road north from Garrucha, through Puerto Rey, and Vera Playa is well signposted after a further 1.5 kms.

5. Banana Beach, Greece

Skiathos, near Koukounaries, on the south-west coast

Banana beach is the collective name for three lovely sandy bays well loved by nude bathers. Before you ask, the name refers to the fact the beaches are yellow and curved. View photos of sunbathers at this beach here.

During peak season bare bathers mainly use Little Banana, one of the smaller coves, as clothed holidaymakers descend on the main beach. Little Banana is often called the best bare beach in Greece, although there is plenty of competition for the accolade. There is a bus terminus and car park at the end of the Koukounaries road, coming from Skiathos town. The footpath to Banana takes 15 mins through olive groves.

6. Valalta, Croatia

Istria, near Rovinj

If you feel the need for a truly naked de-stress, Valalta is everything you could wish for. It’s so good the nudist campsite here was voted the best in Croatia last year – among all sites, not just bare ones. With two miles of sand and rock beaches, including secluded coves, lined by olive trees and vineyards, this nude beach and village are well loved by bare beach connoisseurs.

The beach is on the Istrian peninsula, 60 miles south of Trieste and five miles from Rovinj. You can visit for the day (€2 entry) or book holidays through UK nude beach specialist Peng Travel (0845 345 8345) or www.valalta.hr

7. Playa de Maspalomas, Canary Islands

Near Playa del Ingles, southern Gran Canaria

Hundreds of acres of sand dunes, looking just like the Sahara, frame the beautiful beach between Maspalomas and the popular resort of Playa del Ingles. It’s 3 kms from one end to the other and over 1 km deep. The bare areas, like the swimsuited ones, have sunbeds and umbrellas for hire. For a quieter spot, walk into the vast expanse of dunes, but be careful not to get lost!

You can walk to the bare beach areas from either end, although the walk from Maspalomas town is slightly shorter.

8. Euronat, France

Atlantic coast, north-west of Bordeaux

The south-west coast of France is almost one vast nude beach, stretching over 100 miles from Biarritz to the Gironde. Among stiff competition, the nude resort beach of Euronat stands out for its clean golden sand, supervised swimming and friendly atmosphere. Thousands of happy families gather here, and the beach is open to both nudist campers and day visitors alike. Other highly regarded resort beaches heading south are Montalivet CHM, La Jenny and Arnaoutchot.

From the seaside town of Montalivet-les-Bains, drive north on the D102 coast road. After 3 kms the road turns sharply right inland. Park and walk on to the beach – the main bare area is to the right.

9. Plakias Beach, Greece

Plakias town, south-west Crete

A fabulous setting of cliffs, mountains and a huge sweep of golden sand make this beach a wonderful place for all-over tanning and fine snorkelling. The sea shelves gently, making it suitable for families, and there are showers available. Refreshments are brought to the beach in season, and umbrellas are available.

The nude area is the last section of the beach, to the left as you face the sea, and unsurprisingly it is often the most popular part of the whole bay.

10. Les Grottes Plage, France

Ile du Levant, Mediterranean

This gem of a beach on the magical island of Levant is reached by an easy coastal footpath 10 mins walk from the quayside. A small natural cove of white sand slides gently into the turquoise sea, providing excellent swimming and snorkelling. The easiest way to get here is by ferry from Le Lavandou, between St Tropez and Toulon.

Seventy years ago Ile du Levant was the birthplace of nude leisure in France. Today, there is a tiny resident community and lots of holiday accommodation. Minimal clothing is normally worn in the village of Heliopolis, but the rest can be enjoyed as nature intended.
